George Frey OAM donates private collection of SHALOM to Brisbane Hebrew Congregation Public Library

George Frey, the founding editor of SHALOM magazine, had kept in his possession every issue of SHALOM since it was first published in July 1964.

George, now 92, feels that his collection of SHALOM needs to be lodged in the public domain as it is an integral part of the history of the Jewish community of Brisbane and South East Queensland. SHALOM is and has been the official record of our community and as such is the only publication through which the changes in our community have been reflected.

Although SHALOM is on deposit at the State Library of Queensland this is the first time that an entire collection has been privately donated to a library.

BHCPL librarians Jenny Creese and Pearl Cutter will shortly be cataloguing and recording SHALOM into the library’s collection when it will be made available for research purposes at the library premises.

The editorial team of SHALOM, realising the significance of this donation, wishes to ask all members of the community to contact us if they are holding significant collections of SHALOM magazine so that plans can be made to preserve them for future generations.
